Nel cuore della notte, Emma Goldman viene chiamata per aiutare a partorire una donna di una povera famiglia ebrea di Brooklyn, numerosa e con molte bocche da sfamare. Cerca di alleviare la sofferenza della partoriente. Tornata a casa, si confronta con il suo compagno Ed, esausto per le sue assenze. Costretta a scegliere tra l’amore per lui e il suo attivismo, scrive l’influente discorso “La tragedia dell’emancipazione femminile” (1906). Di origini ucraino-ebraiche, il lavoro di Macha Ovtchinnikova è ispirato alle storie eroiche e tragiche che hanno segnato la sua infanzia: la lotta del popolo nella rivoluzione socialista e la tragedia degli ebrei. Mescola un approccio documentaristico, le arti visive e la finzione, creando una mise-en- scène di grande impatto. È professoressa di storia ed estetica del cinema contemporaneo all’Università di Strasburgo, Francia.
Emma Goldman is called in the night to help deliver a baby in a poor Jewish family of Brooklyn, with many mouths to feed. She tries to alleviate the suffering of the woman in labour. Back home, she is confronted by her partner Ed, exhausted by her absences. Forced to choose between her love for him and her activism, she writes the influential speech “The Tragedy of Woman’s Emancipation” (1906). Of Ukrainian-Jewish descent, Macha Ovtchinnikova’s work is inspired by the heroic and tragic stories that shaped her childhood: the struggle of the people in the socialist revolution and the tragedy of the Jews. She mixes a documentary approach, visual arts and fiction, creating a very powerful mise-en-scène. She is a professor of Contemporary Cinema history & aesthetics at the University of Strasbourg, France.
